They saw an ad for the Peninsula Neighborhood in the UI Alumni Magazine.
Diana Miller and Carmen Griggs watched the Neighborhood virtually grow and change for three years from Boston where they lived for 26 years. Both were intrigued by the concept of a planned community. They liked the varied styles of houses in the Peninsula...some seemed to mirror row houses in Boston...but more than that they wanted to be part of a neighborhood.
Diana and Carmen were also interested because they both went to graduate school at UI and had family nearby, and so they planned to move back to Iowa City after retirement. In August, 2014, they were the first to buy their living space in the Oaks Condominium. They liked the Peninsula’s access to downtown Iowa City as well as its proximity to beautiful wooded walks that connected with the Iowa River or prairie and the wildlife that resided there.
Retired but active in lots of ways, Carmen and Diana keep very busy. Both have been involved in the Oaks Condo Association. Carmen served on the Oaks Board for two years, and Diana is currently on the Board. They like taking part in decision making concerning their home and building connections with other residents.
In Boston, Diana was the Director of a Memory Support Assisted Living at Newbridge on the Charles. Currently she is interested in painting, writing poetry, and genealogy. Carmen was V-P and Dean of Students at The Boston Conservatory. She enjoys political work and taking classes at the UI Senior College and the Senior Center. They both volunteer on committees at their church, the Unitarian Universalist Society (UUS), and serve as team leaders when UUS prepares and serves a monthly meal at the Free Lunch Program.
Iowa City? They love Hancher, the Voxman, the Englert, and all the accessible cultural and educational opportunities in the City. The move to Iowa City and the Peninsula Neighborhood has been successful and satisfying for both.
