When Jake Simmons moved to Iowa City for his work, he was attracted to the variety and character of the Peninsula homes. Jake grew up in suburbia (West Des Moines), and had enough of cookie cutter houses. He could have opted for an old house, but is happy with his decision to move to the Peninsula. Jake now lives at 1443 Foster Road.
Location is also an important factor in his choice because he can easily walk to work--or even better--walk home from work because his job does occasionally involve drinking beer. Jake is general manager of Backpocket Brewing, a craft beer brewery and taproom at 903 Quarry Road in Coralville, in the Iowa River Landing area (right by the Marriott). Before moving to Iowa City to start up Backpocket, Jake brewed beer in Maine, St. Louis (Schlafly Beer), and McGregor, Iowa (Old Man River Brewery).
Backpocket has been brewing German-style beers for a little over a year, and each brand is named after something you can carry in your back pocket: Gold Coin, Slingshot, Wooden Nickel, Jackknife and Penny Whistle. They sell beer in the major Iowa markets and begun making inroads to sell their products out of state.
You can enjoy the beers in their taproom as well as freshly baked brick-oven pizza. You can also enjoy special events at Backpocket. Jake is an avid bicycler; Wednesday nights the brewery sponsors a bike ride that starts and ends at the taproom. The 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month features a live Irish music session with fiddles, flutes, whistles and bagpipes. Thursdays are an outdoor movie, and bands are scheduled for Saturdays.
The upcoming Peninsula fall party will feature some of the Backpocket brands.
