When Linus and his humans, Keith and Lorie, decided to move from rural West Branch to Iowa City, they looked at several homes in various neighborhoods. Linus’s vote was for their current residence at 1471 Foster Road because it’s so close to his favorite special place, the dog park. Linus loves his daily trips down the hill to the park. He also loves people and he especially loves parties and potlucks.
Linus is a mixed breed. He was initially identified as a Corgi mix, and he looks the part, but a DNA test proved that wrong. According to the lab report, Linus has four strong lines: German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Schipperke, and Chinese Shar Pei. Other breeds are in the mix but to lesser degrees.
The Peninsula is a dog-loving community. If you are considering adding a dog to your family, Linus suggests you consider adopting from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, his alma mater. Kirkwood offers certifications in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Assisting and Dog Grooming. A fully staffed vet clinic is on the campus in southeast Cedar Rapids where the students are trained.
At the beginning of each semester, Kirkwood collects cats and dog of all kinds, ages and health conditions from area shelters for students to work with in the clinic. The animals are treated for existing health conditions, brought to good health, vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped. At semester’s end, the animals are put up for adoption. You can even visit the animals online at www.kirkwood.edu/animal adoption. A dog can be adopted for $132, and you receive meticulous records of the care given at Kirkwood. Linus’s current vet says he’s never seen a Kirkwood dog that was not successful in this new home.
